There are some people in Winnipeg who are looking to get some help concerning their alcohol abuse or addiction. Sometimes, professional help is absolutely necessary when the individuals can’t stop drinking by themselves. There are a total of 63 free alcohol and drug treatment available in Winnipeg. And out of those 63 locations, 43 of them are Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. This way, the individuals can choose between a 12 step program or a more advanced alcohol treatment in Manitoba. But there are still many people who are not seeking help for themselves and so should be helped along.
Winnipeg Alcohol Abuse
In the city of Winnipeg, it has been seen that there are a lot of underage drinking going on in schools and such. The majority of the underage drinking happens when the students are 17 years old, which right before they are actually of legal age. There was a study made with students in Manitoba. And the numbers showed that there is an average of 64,8 percent of the students which have drunk alcohol. This is more than half and so it is shows how much drinking alcohol starts at a young age.
The study also showed that there are more boys that start drinking earlier (around Grade 7 and Grade 8). But it also shows that when you get around Grade 9 and Grade 10 there are more girls who drink alcohol than there are boys and this trend continues up to Grade 12. They also surveyed students from all the Grades and separated them so that we could get a better idea of the progression of alcohol in the school. The numbers were as followed:
• Grade 7 – 31,0 percent
• Grade 8 – 44,8 percent
• Grade 9 – 64,5 percent
• Grade 10 – 74 percent
• Grade 11 – 83,6 percent
• Grade 12 – 86,7 percent
Those numbers really show that Grade 9 is where it really starts. But most of the students in that survey are actually underage and are not of legal drinking age.
Drunk Driving in Winnipeg
There are many individuals who take alcohol and then still believe they are good condition to drive. But one does not have to drink a lot of alcohol to go higher than the legal BAC limit which is of 0.08 percent for Winnipeg. There are several individuals who suffer the consequences of driving while under the influence. There are dangers regarding injuries and even death for self but there are also dangers regarding injuries brought to others and even killing other people.
In Winnipeg, the officials have their seasonal checkstop in order to help curb drunk driving in the city. There were 76 people who were arrested during that time. There were also 59 licenses that were suspended because the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The officials in Winnipeg noticed that half of the people they arrested during that time were between the age of 20 and 25 years old. This age bracket seems to be the most likely to drink while under the influence.
In between the months of May and September 2009, the officials of the city noticed an increase of 47 percent in the number of people charged with driving while impaired. This is both good and bad news. First off, it is good news as it means that the police officials are actually stopping the dangerous people on the road. But it is a bad news as it means that there are still many people who have not realized the danger of getting behind the wheel after they have taken alcohol. If you know an alcoholic who needs help.
