The city of Victoria is a beautiful city, filled with architecture and wonderful people. Unfortunately, the city has its fair share of alcohol related problems, but nowhere near as bad as cities in Ontario. In fact, the majority of the population is considered as light drinkers. Although the statistics show Victoria is in fair shape for their alcohol related issues, it must implement new facilities and education to ensure these stats do not worsen.
General Situation
As with most other areas in Canada, Victoria follows a common trend. Those aged between nineteen and twenty-four drink the most, and as the age groups increase, the number of alcohol drinkers does too. In fact, over ninety percent of all individuals aged nineteen to twenty-four consume a drink regularly.
While that statistic may seem frightening, it is important to remember that these individuals are light drinkers. Over seventy-six percent of all drinkers drink lightly, often a glass of wine or two. In addition, another fifty-five percent drink slightly heavier but on fewer occasions. The only real concern evident in Victoria is the binge drinking percentage, which sits at approximately thirteen percent, and the percentage of those who drink excessively, which is standing at fifteen percent.
Teenage Alcohol Problem
While the percents above sound dire, they are not near as bad as other cities. As previously mentioned, ninety percent of individuals aged nineteen to twenty-four are drink, and sixty-six percent of those aged fifteen to eighteen drink.
These statistics are imperative to acknowledge, as they demonstrate the fact that there are many teenagers drinking at an age that is illegal. This is a cause for grave concern, as it is teaching teenagers that the rules and guidelines set by government do not matter.
This will of course result in a higher chance of not only alcohol problems, but drink driving too. If Victoria wants to reduce the overall chances of this from happening, they must teach their teenagers the importance of responsible drinking and the importance of following laws - such as no drinking under nineteen years of age.
Driving While Impaired
Victoria has seen a huge increase in terms of those who drive under the influence. In order to combat this effectively, the city is introducing new laws and tools for police to use at their own freewill.
Some of these tools and laws include immediate suspensions. For example, if someone is caught with an alcohol level of 0.05 - 0.08, you can be fined two-hundred dollars and have your license immediately suspended. This increases the more you are caught until you are caught a third time. When this happens you will need to pay a four-hundred dollar fine and their license will be suspended for thirty days. Furthermore, they will need to take a course and pass it to obtain their license again.
These measures are easy to introduce and will ensure the overall cases of drunk driving will be reduced throughout Victoria. This is an essential step to ensure the safety of every human being; however, there must be more focus put on actually catching these people. Once they know they will get caught, they are less likely to do it.
Treating Alcoholic Addictions
If you are suffering from an alcoholic addiction or dependency, it is important to seek professional help immediately. Victoria has many alcohol treatment facilities in B.C available that offer all the different types of assistance you need. They also have a few teenage alcohol treatment facilities to provide the younger population with adequate therapy.
Victoria is also near Vancouver. If you are experiencing long waiting lists - which can occur, especially in residential treatment facilities - do not hesitate to make the extra distance. Some of their facilities are extremely superior to ones in Victoria. When an alcoholic needs help. Do not hesitate!
In order to efficiently reduce the number of people with alcohol problems, Victoria must introduce educational programs to teenagers and construct more facilities. Teenagers are the future, and right now they are no promising safe roads. It is imperative that Victoria starts educating this age groups more about responsible drinking, and of course, drunk driving. This education should include the negatives and effects it has on their bodies, while also providing them with alternative methods of transportation, such as taking a cab or selecting a designated driver.
