Prince Edward Island Alcohol Statistics

Every province in Canada has some sort of problem with alcohol use. In Prince Edward Island, it is seen in schools, within the student community. A survey was done in 2007 in order to find out how many students were afflicted with alcohol. It was reported that 46 per cent of the students in Prince Edward Island were current alcohol drinkers. They also found that 26 per cent of all the students in the province drink alcohol frequently. There is no real difference between the boys and the girls when it comes to drinking. It has also been observed that the more the students grow older, the higher the percentage of drinkers.
The statistics say that:
•    Grade 7 – 8 per cent
•    Grade 9 – 37 per cent
•    Grade 10 – 60 per cent
•    Grade 12 – 77 per cent

This shows how alcohol drinking increases suddenly between Grade 7 and Grade 9 and how it just goes on growing. In Grade 12, there were 45 per cent of them who drink frequently. There were also 50 per cent of the students who admitted to having participated in binge drinking during the month prior. The survey also said that 45 per cent of them had drunk enough alcohol to get drunk during the past month.

There have been 17 per cent of the Grade 12 students who have used a fake ID or just plainly lied about their age in order to get alcohol. There are 40 per cent of the students who use a friend in order to get alcohol.

Drunk Driving in Prince Edward Island

Within the Grade 12 students alone, there were 15 per cent who said that they had driven a car right after having drunk two or more drinks of alcohol. There were also 21 per cent of them who admitted having gotten in a car with a legally impaired driver. This is way too much because drunk driving causes a lot of accidents in Prince Edward Island. Drunk driving takes many lives and destroys that much more every year.

Students should be made more aware of the dangers of binge drinking and drunk driving. If they became more aware, it would help the authorities and organizations in fighting alcohol addiction and drunk driving. The students should be approached when they are younger, preferably before they start drinking, this way we prevent it instead of just fighting it.
