Alcohol Treatment in Newfoundland and labrador

There are many people who have developed a dependency to alcohol overtime. For those people, the alcohol treatments available in Newfoundland and Labrador are very beneficial, even necessary. Many people have sought help in alcohol treatment centres and have gotten over their addiction. There are around 15 treatment centers located in Newfoundland and Labrador. Although this number may be small compared to other provinces, those centres are truly helpful and many have sought their help for alcohol treatment in the past.

Alcohol Abuse in Newfoundland

Newfoundland and Labrador is a Canadian province in which there are some problems with alcohol. Actually, it is not as bad as other provinces but the authorities are still trying to make it better. In 2007, there was a study performed on the students in Newfoundland and Labrador in order to establish the degree of alcohol prevalence in schools.

They found that 52 percent of all the students surveyed said that they had drunk some alcohol during the 12 months prior. This is sort of a good sign because in 2003, the statistic was 58 percent. In the survey, there were almost 28 percent of the students who said that they had drunk alcohol to the point of being drunk during the month before the survey. This shows that students have a tendency to drink a lot either at major parties or social gatherings. They also showed that less than 10 percent of the students buy their own liquor, almost 27 percent of them get it from their home (whether the parents agree or not).

There are many problems which can come about when they drink alcohol. For example, over 10 percent of the students who drink injured themselves while under the influence. There were 9 percent who reported having damaged things around them. There were 8.4 percent who said their drinking caused tensions and arguments with their families and their friends.

When students start drinking alcohol, their judgement can often get significantly impaired and so the decisions made can sometimes have some undesirable effect. One of them which are observed more and more is drunk driving. Between Grade 10 and Grade 12, some students get their license. There were 16.3 percent of the students who said they had driven a vehicle while they had taken some alcohol an hour before. In 2007, there were 16.9 percent who admitted to having gotten in a car with someone who had taken alcohol. Another phenomenon is the fact that some students engage in unsafe sex while under the influence of alcohol. This can bring more problems, such as STDs and unplanned pregnancies.

There really is a turning point that happens between Grade 7 and Grade 9. A lot more people start drinking alcohol in Grade 9. That is why alcohol awareness education should be given to younger students so that the authorities can prevent alcoholism before it becomes a real problem.
