Manitoba is a province who is struggling with people taking alcohol at a young age. People are really focusing on stopping the students from drinking as it can often develop in alcohol addiction. There are about 82 percent of the Manitoba students (Grade 12) who reported having drunk alcohol during the previous year. The drinking actually starts in Grade 7 usually and the percentage increases with every Grade. Actually, combining all Grades, 55 percent of all students reported drinking the preceding year. According to statistics, the boys drink more than the girls.

For Grade 12 students, alcohol dependency happens once in a while. There are 25 percent of the Grade 12 students who are addicted to alcohol. But alcoholism can start at even a younger age. There are almost 12 percent of the students (Grade 7-8) who are considered being high risk and/or alcohol dependent. There are different reasons why students turn to drinking. Some say that this is how they deal with their problems in life (12.4 percent). There are some students who use alcohol as a way to relax and let go (30 percent). But a lot of other students consider alcohol to be dangerous, much like any other drug (about 67 percent).

Another phenomenon comes about with all this drinking at a young age. This problem is drunk driving. Many people get their license while they are still studying, and with all the parties and social gatherings, impaired driving can come about. About 7 percent of the students have at least once driven a car within an hour of having drunk at least two drinks of alcohol. And 40 percent of students admitted to having gotten in a car with a driver who was legally impaired. This is very reckless as alcohol can seriously mess with one’s coordination and reflexes. This means that they run a higher risk of injuring themselves and others than they usually would under normal circumstances.

Almost 4 percent of the students said that they didn’t see any problem with drinking and driving. This shows just how uneducated some people are. The authorities in Manitoba are really trying to bring a higher awareness to the youth of the province in order to prevent needless accidents and to also get alcoholism at the source. This way, a lot less adults in the future will turn to alcohol and there will be less and less alcoholics.
