British Columbia Alcohol Treatment

There are people in British Columbia who have to get a professional treatment given by professionals in order to help them stop their alcohol addiction. There are many type of alcohol treatment which can be found in British Columbia. Those can include Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, inpatient treatments, outpatient treatments and aftercare centres which can help a person get through the transition. There are 1230 alcohol  treatments and support group available in British Columbia, those can treat for both alcohol and drug addiction.

British Columbia Alcohol Statistics

British Columbia, much like other provinces, has a certain problem with alcohol use and abuse. In 2004, there was a study done on the pattern of alcohol use. It shows that most of the drinkers in BC are between the ages of 19 to 24 years old. The trend shows that the percentage of people drinking alcohol decreases as their ages increase. The percentage for each age bracket goes as follows:
•    15 to 18 years old: 66 %
•    19 to 24 years old: 90 %
•    25 to 39 years old: 85 %
•    40 to 64 years old: 77 %
•    65 years old and up: 73 %

The statistics also show that there are more males than females that drink alcohol. Most of the people in BC are light infrequent drinkers (31 % for males and 45 % for females).  There are a lot of people who are light but frequent drinkers (31 % for males and 24 % for females). There are also some people who binge drink but on an occasional basis (8 % for males and 5 % for females). But there are way too many people who participate in heavy drinking on a regular basis (12 % for males and 3 % for females). Those statistics really show how males are more prone to heavy drinking. Any sort of drinking happening on a regular basis is dangerous because there are risks of getting addicted to it.

Dangers Related to Alcohol in BC

In 2002, BC saw an increase of almost 12 percent in the number of hospitalizations due to alcohol and 18 percent of neuro-psychiatric deaths related to alcohol use. Those are the side effects of alcohol abuse and addiction at its worst.

There is another danger related to alcohol abuse and that is drunk driving. In 2006, 30 to 35 percent of the deaths on the roads were because of alcohol or drug use on the road. There were 401 deaths in road accidents in BC. Those deaths could have been avoided had the people been more responsible after their drinking. On an everyday basis, there are about 10 percent of the people who are impaired on the roads. A few organisations are trying to curb drunk driving in British Columbia. It’s important that people understand that while there are a certain number of people who die because of drunk driving, there are a lot more lives that are crushed because of those accidents.
