The Binge Drinker
People can sometimes confuse binge drinking with being an alcoholic but the fact is, a binge drinker is not really dependent on alcohol. So what is a binge drinker? It is someone who drinks a lot of alcohol in one sitting and raises his alcohol blood level to an intoxicated state. However, he or she does not crave alcohol all the time like an alcoholic does.
Some people find a special even such as the Super Bowl or a weekend party as a great time to be a binge drinker. Your favorite team made it and you are celebrating with a six pack or more or you have a bottle of hard liquor ready for toasting each successful pass or touchdown.
A birthday party is happening and you are having fun, dancing, laughing, carrying on with your friends and partying hard. Sure, you might wake up with a hangover in the morning but it it is not like you drink every day, right?
Still, binge drinkers do need to be a bit more responsible. A binge drinker gets into trouble with the law with driving while intoxicated incidences perhaps even more so than alcoholics. How can that be, you might wonder? Because a true alcoholic usually walks, takes a cab, has a designated drinker or even more likely, just sits home and drinks. A binge drinker thinks he can handle his alcohol when he really can't and makes irresponsible decisions such as drinking and driving.
Binge drinkers can get into trouble in other ways besides the drinking and driving. Some of those DWI violations could turn into intoxicated manslaughter as someone could be killed in an accident caused by a drunk driver.
Someone who binge drinks could get into an argument or domestic squabble. A physical fight could occur. He might never raise his hand to someone sober, yet while intoxicated he has no control over his behavior.
A binge drinker could unintentionally cause fatal harm to himself through alcohol poisoning. Drinking too much too fast could lead to seizures, vomiting and unconsciousness, even death. With beer coming in six packs, liquor sold in large bottles, and peer pressure abounding, it is easy for someone to binge drink in a single setting.
What is binge drinking exactly? In the U.S. it is when a man drinks five or more alcoholic drinks one right after the other and when a woman drinks four or more one after the other. It is irresponsible and dangerous. Think about it carefully before you take part in an event that involves binge drinking. In the long run, it could be the most expensive night you ever had, financially, physically, legally and emotionally. Binge drinker will often need an alcohol treatment program.
