Facts about alcohol
There are a lot of things about alcohol that some people just simply may not know. Here are a few. See how much you already knew about alcohol and if any surprised you.
Fact: If you crave alcohol and need “just one drink” to get through the next hour, or something stressful, you are probably dependent on alcohol. If you need just one “more” drink, there is definitely a problem.Fact: Genetics can play a role in alcohol dependency. If your parent was an alcoholic, it could very well explain why you lose control and do not know when to stop. Alcoholism can and has run in the family. This does not mean one should use it as an excuse, only as a possible fact of reality of their own personal situation, making it even more likely that they have a problem with alcohol and therefore need to seek help.
Fact: Drinking alcohol is harmful to your health. It goes directly into the stomach, the bloodstream, then to the brain and tissues, damaging organs along the way. It plays havoc with those who have diabetes and can cause several types of cancer from the esophagus to the liver. It can, does and has affected many hearts and circulatory systems fatally.
Fact: Alcohol has played such a serious role during Pledge Week at universities and colleges that many campuses have ruled that those caught with alcohol on campus or participating in alcohol-related activities can and will be suspended. This follows several deaths from alcohol poisoning and binge drinking involving young people trying to get into a sorority or fraternity during the act of hazing, which is making pledges do embarrassing and humiliating things in order to get into the “club”.
Fact: Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to blackouts and memory loss, as well as the loss of common sense. People loosen up and let down their guard. Women and young girls have been raped or made choices that they would not have made had they had their wits about them. Men and young boys have participated in situations they would not have saved for the fact that they simply were not thinking clearly. People get behind the wheel of a vehicle with children in the car as we have seen with several multiple death situations in the past year alone.
There are more facts about alcohol but the number one fact to remember is: alcohol does affect you. It does cause you to lose your coherent train of thought. It is dangerous to handle equipment or a vehicle when drinking alcohol. It is addictive and a problem throughout Canada, the U.S. and many other parts of the world. The number two most important fact? There is help available in a treatment for alcohol addiction in Canada and the addiction can be overcomed.
