Effects of Alcoholism

Alcohol has long been an accepted form of socializing but when a person excessively drinks, the effects of alcoholism can be damaging physically, mentally, socially and financially. Alcoholism is a very real disease and problem and cannot be overcome alone.  There are drug rehab centers, treatment programs and support groups to help with a successful victory over alcoholism. Our helpline is here to encourage people to make the decision to overcome alcoholism before the effects of it completely destroy a person.

The physical effects are quite serious and can even lead to a person's death. Alcohol hits the bloodstream and goes straight to a person's brain causing physical and mental distress.  The liver is one of the most targeted victims of alcoholism. People end up with cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer and this is a terminal problem. Alcohol can also damage the brain cells, a person's cardiovascular system, and lead to stomach problems.

People with an alcohol problem often find themselves with mental problems as well such as paranoia, delusions, mood swings and irritability. They suffer from memory loss and blackouts, unsure of what went on while they were intoxicated and doing things during that time they would have never done had they been sober.

While drinking alcoholic beverages are common at parties, alcohol can also cause a person social problems. Alcoholics may tend to start staying to themselves so no one sees just how much they are drinking.  People may start avoiding someone who is excessively drinking and the invitations to go out with friends or come over for the big game may stop. Drinking is accepted, ambivalent behavior when drunk is not.

A person can be ruined financially. Whether being sued for driving drunk and causing an accident, calling into work too much in order to stay home and drink, or running up credit card bills at the local liquor store, a person with an alcohol problem finds himself in serious financial trouble quickly when he puts alcohol before anything else.

Families can and do break up over alcohol problems. When a person lets alcohol take over, he can become more aggressive and become physically dangerous to be around.

What are the effects of alcoholism? They are devastating. They can ruin a person's life in every way.  If your loved one is showing signs of alcoholism, seek help for him before it is too late. He needs to face the fact that he has a very real problem.  Call our helpline and we can begin the journey together today and get you in the best alcohol treatment in Canada possible for your needs..
