Physical Effects of Alcohol

The physical effects of alcohol can be devastating, permanent and fatal.  They can age a person and shut down vital organs by causing cancer and cirrhosis, as well as heart and circulation problems that are observed amongst severe alcoholics.  The effects of alcohol can be both short term and long term.

One of the short term effects is having a hangover the next morning.  This can include a major headache, nausea, vomiting, just an overall feeling of “yuck” within one's system.  Drinking too much can make one drunk and lose coordination and common sense, which is why there are so many drunk driving situations.  A person can also suffer temporary memory loss from blacking out or lose consciousness altogether from passing out. Alcohol poisoning can sometimes happen, teens excessively drink and a tragic situation can happen such as death.  This can be caused by the body not being able to handle the alcohol or also by choking on vomit when the body begins throwing up the alcohol.

Long term effects can and are quite devastating.  They include damage to vital organs such as kidneys, the heart, the brain and the liver.  Trying to withdraw from alcohol can bring on physical effects that can seem almost flu-like.  Esophageal and liver cancer are commonly found in those who abuse alcohol, as is cirrhosis of the liver.  Pancreatic cancer has also been linked to alcohol use.

Some people may not realize this, because the liver is usually the most talked about organ when discussing alcohol, but heart problems can also develop.  Excessive alcohol consumption has been directly linked to both high blood pressure and heart disease.

Two other physical problems with alcohol use are fetal alcohol syndrome and erectile dysfunction.  First, a woman does put her child at risk for side effects relating to alcohol just as if she fixed him a beer and directly gave it to him.  Secondly, men who drink alcohol in excess begin to have problems performing sexually.  At first they chalk it up to having just passed out but over time they are forced to admit to themselves and their partner that they now have erectile dysfunction and that unfortunately, age does not have  anything to do with it in their situation.

The physical effects of alcohol are real and can be devastatingly permanent.  Some, however, are reversible or can be stopped before permanent damage occurs and it can be address in a bio-physical alcohol treatment.  If you or a loved one has succumbed to the addiction to alcohol, call the helpline and let us help you get back on the right path to both a physically (and sexually) healthy lifestyle.
